Digital-nomad eSIM guide: hotspot, work apps and backup data
Plan remote-work connectivity around hotspot rules, app access and a second connection—not unlimited marketing.
An eSIM is a backup plan, not a service-level agreement
For work travel, choose a place with usable Wi-Fi and keep mobile data as a second connection. We have not speed-tested these plans, measured uptime or verified performance with your employer's VPN. Network coverage, congestion, roaming routes and phone hardware all affect the result. A provider listing 5G does not promise a reliable video call at your accommodation.
Estimate your own usage from your phone or laptop. Video meetings, cloud sync, operating-system updates and remote desktops can consume far more data than maps and messages. Turn off automatic backups and downloads on a hotspot; keep offline copies of essential files.
Hotspot permission is only the first check
Yesim says hotspot is available on most plans without an additional tethering fee, but the local operator can restrict it. eSIMFOX says you can share your purchased data volume. Neither statement promises a dedicated business connection. Check hotspot permission on the specific destination and bundle, not just the provider homepage.
Saily advertises hotspot sharing, but its consumer terms restrict commercial use and excessive tethering on unlimited plans. Regular unlimited plans have a destination-dependent 3 GB or 5 GB full-speed daily allowance, then 1 Mbps. Do not treat those plans as a replacement for fixed broadband or recommend them for sustained business use without confirmation from Saily.

Check app access before the first workday
Gigago's United States product page explicitly says its product does not support TikTok and most AI applications. If those tools are important for work, do not buy that product assuming a VPN fixes it. The Japan page also says top-up is unavailable, so a different plan may be easier for a long assignment. Product-specific restrictions matter more than broad brand claims.

A practical first-day test
- Verify your phone is unlocked with our phone checker, then follow the exact provider installation instructions.
- Before a critical call, test laptop hotspot, employer VPN, collaboration tools and file uploads at the location where you will work.
- Check data used after one typical work session and revise your budget. Compare total cost per workday as well as per GB.
- Keep another connection available. Two eSIM brands can use the same local network, so check the underlying operators before calling them independent backups.
- Save support instructions and the refund conditions. Do not delete an eSIM while troubleshooting unless support tells you to.
Choose by route and work pattern
For light backup use, compare a fixed-data pack from Airalo, Yesim or eSIMFOX for your destination. For sustained remote work, confirm commercial-use permission, sufficient high-speed data and tethering conditions directly before buying. Yaalo is another plan-check option; its unlimited bundles have fair-use speed reductions and we have not verified exact work-ready allowances or prices.
